In September 2025, we completed a full renovation of a 375 m² TifTuf couch lawn in Mount Lofty.
Watch the complete renovation and documented three-week recovery of this 375 m² TifTuf couch lawn in Mount Lofty.
In September 2025, 1st Class Lawn Care renovated approximately 375 m² of established TifTuf couch in Alford Street, Mount Lofty.
A Predator LS460 fitted with 10 mm-spaced flails completed three passes—East to West, North to South and diagonally—at approximately 1.5 inches deep.
Approximately four cubic metres of a finely screened 80% sand and 20% organic topdressing blend were applied using our Eco250 and wheelbarrows.
The lawn had accumulated thatch and surface unevenness associated with previous irrigation installation. The customer wanted thatch removal, levelling, stronger turf density and repair of the affected areas.
Our Ryan Lawnaire 28 completed one pass using 19 mm hollow tines penetrating approximately 2.5 inches into the soil profile.
A soil wetting agent and our instant and controlled-release nitrogen fertiliser blend supported recovery. Three weeks later, the renovated TifTuf lawn was ready to mow.
In September 2025, 1st Class Lawn Care completed a full lawn renovation across approximately 375 square metres of established TifTuf couch at a residential property in Alford Street, Mount Lofty, Toowoomba. The lawn contained accumulated thatch and had developed surface unevenness following the installation of an irrigation system. The customer wanted the renovation to remove thatch, improve surface levels, repair the areas affected by the irrigation work and encourage stronger TifTuf density.
Before quoting the renovation, we completed our mandatory onsite soil pH test. The lawn returned a pH reading of 6.5, which was suitable for the planned renovation, so lime was not required. The lawn was scalped using Victa 460 utility mowers before being deeply scarified with a Predator LS460 fitted with flails spaced approximately 10 mm apart.
The Predator completed three scarification passes in different directions: East to West, North to South and then diagonally. The flails worked approximately 1.5 inches below the surface, cutting through accumulated organic material and the upper profile rather than performing a light surface-only grooming treatment. The released material was collected using a Walker high-vacuum mower where access permitted and Bushranger 800SP commercial self-propelled mowers within the restricted internal areas.
The lawn then received one complete hollow-tine aeration pass using a Ryan Lawnaire 28 fitted with 19 mm coring tines. The tines penetrated approximately 2.5 inches into the soil profile. Approximately four cubic metres of premium finely screened topdressing containing 80% sand and 20% organic material were applied, distributed and levelled. A soil wetting agent and our blend of immediately available and controlled-release nitrogen fertiliser were also applied. The video documents the lawn’s recovery, with the TifTuf ready to be mown three weeks after renovation.
The 375 m² TifTuf couch lawn in Alford Street, Mount Lofty received both deep mechanical scarification and hollow-tine core aeration because the two processes addressed different parts of the lawn profile. Scarification targeted accumulated thatch and organic material while core aeration created openings through the underlying soil.
After the lawn was scalped with Victa 460 utility mowers, a Predator LS460 scarifier fitted with flails spaced approximately 10 mm apart completed three full passes. The first pass travelled East to West, the second North to South and the third diagonally. Changing direction between passes allowed the flails to work through the lawn from multiple angles rather than following the same channels repeatedly. The flails reached approximately 1.5 inches below the surface, making this deep scarification rather than seasonal turf grooming at canopy level.
Once the scarification material had been collected, our Ryan Lawnaire 28 completed one full pass using 19 mm hollow coring tines at an approximate penetration depth of 2.5 inches or 64 mm. The hollow tines physically extracted plugs from the soil profile rather than merely puncturing it. The Ryan Lawnaire 28’s published specifications include a 28-inch working width, an aeration pattern of approximately 3.5 inches by 5 inches and the capacity to produce up to 12 aeration holes per square foot during one pass.
Combining three-direction scarification with hollow-tine aeration allowed the renovation to address the heavily worked surface, accumulated thatch and underlying soil profile before the topdressing material was applied.
The Alford Street property contained smaller internal gates that prevented some of our larger renovation and collection equipment from reaching every part of the 375 m² lawn. Rather than treating only the easily accessible areas, 1st Class Lawn Care changed the machinery and material-handling process to complete the same renovation stages throughout the property.
Where access permitted, a Walker high-vacuum mower was used to collect scarification waste released by the Predator LS460. Within the restricted internal sections, the lighter and narrower Bushranger 800SP 21-inch commercial self-propelled mowers were used for collection. This allowed the team to remove loosened thatch and turf debris without requiring the larger Walker to pass through gates it could not safely access.
The Eco250 topdresser was used to apply the premium 80% sand and 20% organic blend across accessible areas. Because the Eco250 could not enter the smaller-gated sections, topdressing material was transported into those areas manually using wheelbarrows. The four cubic metres of topdressing were then distributed using drag mats and refined by hand using levelling rakes.
The access restrictions changed the equipment and material-delivery method, but they did not remove any of the required renovation stages. The internal areas still received scalping, three-direction scarification, debris collection, hollow-tine aeration, topdressing, levelling, soil wetting agent and fertiliser.
Approximately four cubic metres of premium, finely screened topdressing were applied across the 375 m² TifTuf couch lawn in Alford Street, Mount Lofty. The blend contained approximately 80% sand and 20% organic material. The sand component assisted with surface correction and distribution through the renovated turf, while the organic component formed part of the selected growing-medium blend.
The Eco250 topdresser mechanically applied material wherever property access allowed. Wheelbarrows were used to move topdressing through the smaller internal gates that prevented the Eco250 from entering parts of the lawn. Drag mats were then used to distribute and work the material across the renovated surface. Levelling rakes provided greater manual control around uneven areas, irrigation-installation repairs, edges and sections requiring finer adjustment.
Before the renovation was quoted, the soil returned a pH result of 6.5. Because the pH was already appropriate for the planned work, lime was not added unnecessarily. A soil wetting agent was applied to support water movement through the renovated profile. We also applied our fertiliser blend combining immediately available nitrogen for the initial response with controlled-release nitrogen to continue feeding the recovering TifTuf couch.
The project video documents the result three weeks after the September 2025 renovation. By that stage, the TifTuf couch had recovered sufficiently for mowing, providing genuine visual evidence of the lawn’s response rather than relying only on an immediate after-work photograph.
