Having a lush and green lawn all year round is not as difficult as it may seem. With some simple and regular lawn care practices, you can ensure that your lawn remains healthy and beautiful throughout the year. In this yearly lawn care guide, we will cover the basics of watering, fertilising, weed control, and lawn grub prevention to help you achieve the lawn of your dreams.
Firstly though, we need to emphasise the importance of consistency. Going to the gym once or twice will not give you a chiseled physique, in fact it wont make a discernible difference. But going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week consistently through an entire year, will often yield dramatic results. Same too with lawn care. It is consistently following the process that will give you the results you are after.
Frequent Mowing
Mowing, and mowing often, is the number one factor for a great lawn. bowls greens, golf greens and soccer pitches during tournaments are often mowed up to three times per day. I am not saying you need to go to these extremes, but from experience I can tell you that the more frequently you mow with sharp blades on good quality machines, the better your lawn will be. In another article I will go into depth on the hormonal reactions frequent mowing creates, and why that creates a more dense, resilient grass canopy.
Watering Twice Per Week
Proper watering is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. Watering your lawn twice per week, 12mm per time is generally sufficient, but it is important to adjust the frequency depending on the weather conditions. During hot and dry periods, you may need to water more to prevent your lawn from drying out. Watering early in the morning is the best time to avoid evaporation and ensure that the water reaches the roots of the grass.
Fertilising Each Season
Fertilising your lawn is crucial for providing the essential nutrients that grass needs to grow and thrive. Ideally, you should fertilise your lawn five times a year, once in each season (twice in Winter). Choose a high-quality, slow-release granular fertiliser that is specifically formulated for the type of grass you have in your lawn ( Your lawn type dictates how much Nitrogen per year it likes without thatching up, this can be calculated back to how much fertiliser is required at each application). Apply the fertiliser evenly using a spreader and water the lawn immediately after application to help the nutrients penetrate the soil. In Winter, utlise liquid fertilisers high in Iron to maintain green colour.
Pre-Emergent Herbicide Twice Per Year
Weeds can quickly take over your lawn if left unchecked. To prevent weeds from germinating and invading your lawn, apply a pre-emergent herbicide twice per year, in Spring and Autumn. Pre-emergent herbicides work by creating a barrier in the soil that prevents weed seeds from reaching the surface by killing them off quickly after sprouting. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when applying the herbicide, and water the lawn lightly after application to activate the product.
Lawn Grub Prevention with Acelapryn Application
Lawn grubs, such as armyworms and cutworms, can cause extensive damage to your lawn if not controlled. To prevent lawn grub infestations, apply a product containing Acelapryn twice per year, in Spring and Autumn. Acelapryn is a systemic insecticide that targets and kills lawn grubs before they can cause damage. Apply the product according to the label instructions, and water the lawn thoroughly after application to ensure proper absorption.
